Apart from his role in the Avengers sequels, Robert Downey Jr. isn’t signed on to suit up for another solo Iron Man gig anytime soon. The actor, who’s currently promoting his film The Judge at the Toronto Film Festival, told Variety when it comes to a fourth Iron Man movie, there’s nothing in the works… yet:
There isn’t one in the pipe. No, there’s no plan for a fourth ‘Iron Man.’ It’s down to Kevin [Feige, Marvel Studios president] and Ike [Perlmutter, CEO of Marvel Entertainment] and Disney to come to us with what the proposal is, and that’s on us to agree or disagree.
The actor previously signed a two-year deal with the studio to star in the Avengers sequels and just finished filming Avengers: Age of Ultron which is set to be released next summer. The star’s on board for the third installment in the Marvel franchise, which should hit theaters in 2018, but as of now, he hasn’t committed to play billionaire, philanthropist, playboy Tony Stark in a third Iron Man sequel. With plenty of other Marvel projects already lined up (some as far into the future as 2019) it looks RDJ might be hanging up his superhero suit sooner than we thought.
