See that puppy? A cutie, right? Her owner, a Harry Potter fan named Anna Musilli, named her Bellatrix, after Bellatrix Lestrange from the books (played by Helena Bonham Carter in the movies). Naturally, she thought that J.K. Rowling, the creator of Bellatrix would be tickled to know about the adorable canine honor so she contacted the author on Twitter — and actually got a response! But was it the response she was hoping for? Ehhh, probably not:
.@Anna_musilli That dog is far too cute to be named Bellatrix. It's not too late to call her Luna, you know.

Oh. Well, if anyone knows how evil and terrible Bellatrix Lestrange is, it’s Rowling. She created the Death Eater herself, got into her head and plumbed the depths of her rotten heart. And she admitted that she was actually happy to kill her off. As Aja Romano writes on The Daily Dot:
…[I]f you’re fond of villains, Bellatrix is pretty much as evil as it gets. She was easily Voldemort’s most devoted follower, utterly devoted to his genocidal ideals and committed to wiping out anyone standing in the way. Highlights from Bellatrix’s storied career include:
- Using Cruciatus (an Unforgivable curse that tortures the victims) to drive two young parents insane.
- Getting a life sentence, then breaking out of the most secure wizarding prison in Britain.
- Holding a teenage girl hostage and torturing her for months.
- Singlehandedly destroying the Great Hall of Hogwarts Castle.
- Casual animal cruelty.
- Oh, and the cold-blooded murder of numerous beloved characters in the series, including multiple members of her own family. (And no, we’ll never be over it.)
So, there’s all that. It might be unfair to bestow this kind of moniker on an innocent puppy — assuming this puppy is innocent and not a Death Eater in disguise — but maybe the name is just perfectly pretty and cute that it can be separated from its original owner. And it’s not like Bellatrix Lestrange chose her own name as an infant, though her parents might have had some thoughts about it…
Am I over thinking this? I think I’m overthinking this.
