The internet has gone through a lot of boyfriends in the past couple of years, including Oscar Isaac, Chris Pratt, Tom Hiddleston, and Benedict Cumberbatch. But we always come crawling back to Ryan Gosling, our dear sweet Baby Goose who stars in the year’s most swoon-tastic movie, La La Land. He sings, he dances, he still doesn’t understand the “Hey Girl” meme.
During last year’s South by Southwest, director Guillermo del Toro asked Gosling about where the “Hey Girl” thing comes from. “I never said that!” he responded. “I understand if you’re in a movie and you say, ‘I’ll be back.’ You have to own it, but I never said it.” (The actual answer is the F*ck Yeah Ryan Gosling blog.) Yet the phrase has continued to follow Gosling around, the way he’ll follow you with chocolates and back rubs when you’re not feeling well.
Even his La La Land co-star Emma Stone — who memorably warned everyone against mocking Twitter — is confused. “I don’t even understand,” she told Gosling during an interview with Variety. “I mean, you’re great but why have you become this… why? Do you at least get paychecks on your coloring book?” Gosling answered, “Do you remember when Fabio got hit in the face with a pigeon on the roller coaster and it broke his nose? Sometimes I feel like I’m the pigeon and the internet is Fabio’s face. Actually, I don’t know if I’m the pigeon or I’m Fabio’s face. Depends on the day, I guess.”
Sure, Ryan Gosling, I can’t possibly imagine…
…why the internet is so in love with you.
