Sean Penn is finally talking about that controversial joke he made at the Oscars. To refresh your memory, the actor presented the Best Picture award to Birdman last month, and before he announced the winner, he said, “Who gave this son of a b*tch his green card?” The joke was a reference to director Alejandro G. Iñárritu, who directed the 2003 film 21 Grams, which starred Penn.
Needless to say, the comment offended a few people. According to USA Today, Penn was at a promotional event for his new film, The Gunman, on Saturday and told the Associated Press exactly how he feels about the issue.
“I’m always surprised by flagrant stupidity. I keep having more hope,” Penn tells the AP of the backlash he received.
“The fact is that I understand it. I see it all the time. When somebody sees the opportunity to frame something in the comfort that it will be common — that they can do that and they can get a group to look at them and that they will take on those positions and never really think about what it was,” he added.
“I have absolutely no apologies,” said Penn.
Sean Penn may absolutely have no apologies, but he still has some f*ck-yous to hand out!
“In fact, I have a big f– you for … anybody who is so stupid not to have gotten the irony when you’ve got a country that is so xenophobic,” he said. “If they had their way, you wouldn’t have great filmmakers like Alejandro working in this country. Thank God we do.
In closing, the actor acknowledged the shared moment of humor between him and Iñárritu.
“There’s a little inside humor with he and I knew that he would be the first person in that room to know that his film won,” he said.
Take that, America?
