The Sanjaya-foisting property American Idol may be in storage for the time being, but with shows like The Voice kicking around, we’re not hurting for singing competition entertainment options. In fact, there’s even a singing showdown on the horizon featuring creatures belting out tunes in a bid to impress a music industry bigwig. That bigwig being a koala that sounds suspiciously like celebrated professor Matthew McConaughey. Yes, we’ve reached the koala portion of the McConaissance.
Illumination Entertainment (cinema’s Minion factory) has unveiled the latest trailer for their upcoming animated feature Sing. Written and directed by The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy helmer Garth Jennings, Sing revolves around cheery koala theater owner Buster Moon (McConaughey) and a singing competition he holds that brings out a variety of animals of varying talent and cuteness levels. Reese Witherspoon voices a neglected pig mom, Taron Egerton voices a gorilla teen that wants to leave a life of crime, and Scarlett Johansson lends her talents to play a porcupine rocker. Oh! Also, Seth MacFarlane plays a crooning mouse because if Seth MacFarlane sees an opportunity to croon, he’ll croon it up. That’s sort of his deal.
This latest glimpse at Sing looks pretty charming. The film promises cute animals singing and then delivers cute animals singing. Sometimes you just need a crocodile performing “The Humpy Dance” in your life, y’know. We have the trailer tucked into the top of the post and this animated feature will tumble out in theaters on December 21. If you’re in the mood to see what else Garth Jennings has brought to the world of animation, we have the Hammer & Tongs crafted video for Blur’s “Coffee & TV” below for your viewing pleasure.
