Professor Snape was more than just the guy who KILLED DUMBLEDORE (this is always a fun thing to yell in a crowded room). He was a misunderstood anti-hero. Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger (and us readers) first knew him as the cruel and oily Potions teacher, who only found joy in taking away points from non-Slytherin students. Snape wasn’t quite as relentlessly evil as Voldemort, but there was nothing redeemable about him, either.
Until the final book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, when we learn how he went undercover and tried to protect Harry’s mother, Lily, his long-time love, from Voldemort. It didn’t work, and he spent the rest of his life in agony because of it. He could “never reveal the best of you,” to quote Dumbledore.
The video above puts every important Snape scene from the Harry Potter films in heartbreaking chronological order, made all the more poignant after the death of Alan Rickman. We raise our wands to you.
