We might not get a Space Jam sequel yet, but everyone’s favorite Mexican mouse is slated to star on the big screen in an animated film produced by Warner Bros. Currently titled Speedy, the film is only in the early stages of pre-production, but Mexican actor Eugenio Derbez has been signed on to voice the title character. Derbez told Deadline that he’s perfect to play the role, because not only is he Mexican, but his name is Eugenio Derbez-Gonzales, and he also has big ears like Speedy.
Derbez will also be part of the production team behind Speedy which includes Saving Silverman and Are We Done Yet? screenwriter, Hank Nelken, producer Dylan Sellers, and indie producer, Ben Odell.
Since his official debut in 1955, the “fastest mouse in all of Mexico” has been deemed racist by some and a Mexican hero by others. Derbez views Speedy as the latter, passionately telling Deadline, “He was like a superhero to us, or maybe more like a revolutionario like Simon Bolivar or Pacho Villa.”
Sellers brought up GOP presidential candidate, Donald Trump while chatting with Deadline,“In a time when Donald Trump is gaining momentum, the world needs Speedy more than ever.”
