Star Wars is such a mega-popular entity that the simple fact that “May the Fourth” sounds similar to the iconic Star Wars line “May the Force be with you” means the date has been turned into International Star Wars Day. The fact that Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens is being released December 18 of this year has fans at an even greater level of enthusiasm.
To mark this year’s International Star Wars Day, Spotify has released a list of the most-streamed Star Wars songs, both globally and in the United States. While music and Star Wars don’t necessarily go hand-in-hand in the minds of many, the 215,000 Star Wars-themed playlists on Spotify indicate otherwise. The top song both globally and in the United States? “Duel of the Fates” from Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace.
This is a bit of a surprise, given that, by and large, Star Wars fans hate The Phantom Menace, considering it a blight on the face of humanity. However, John Williams’ “Duel of the Fates,” an epic bit of score, has clearly captured people. Star Wars is not a film series known for lyrically-minded songs or anything of that ilk. These are all scores and orchestral bits of music. And there is a reason these songs, with their big, bombastic drums and brass, really connect with people.
You can check out both lists below (though you’ll have to be a Spotify subscriber). Also, never forget Princess Leia’s Life Day song from the Star Wars Holiday Special.
