To the surprise of pretty much no one, Star Wars: The Force Awakens has been smashing box office records left and right. While George Lucas might not think much of J.J. Abrams’ vision for the franchise, audiences seem to heartily disagree. In fact, The Force Awakens seems to be gunning for the top domestic box office spot held by James Cameron’s Avatar with $760.5 million. According to Deadline, if things continue to go in the same direction, The Force Awakens will have a $90 million weekend haul and overtake Avatar‘s record by Monday.
According to the current numbers, The Force Awakens overtook both Titanic ($658.7 mil) and Jurassic World ($652.27 mil), the previous #2 and #3 spot holders, on Friday, and it’s safe the say that the Na’vi will be the next to succumb to the power of the Force. Between the unstoppable Star Wars behemoth and the success of The Hunger Games franchise, can Hollywood just accept that female led films are worth pursuing and promoting now? Audiences seem to.
