Maybe it shouldn’t be a surprise Suicide Squad reportedly has a sequel already in the works, considering its first trailer was viewed more often in its first week than the first trailer for Avengers: Age of Ultron or the Comic-Con trailer for Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice.
The sequel news was buried in an announcement about another movie at The Wrap. Suicide Squad director David Ayer will be making Bright, starring Will Smith and Joel Edgerton. It’s a movie where orcs and fairies live in the human world and the protagonist is both an orc and a police officer. This needs to be renamed Orc Cop immediately. And Will Smith needs to play the angry commissioner who says, “Give me your badge, your loincloth, and your gun. Actually, keep the loincloth.”
Near the end of The Wrap’s article, they casually throw out, “Ayer hopes to fit the project into his fall schedule before Warner Bros. brings him and Smith back for a planned Suicide Squad sequel in 2017.”
We will admit it’s a little surprising to learn David Ayer is handling the sequel. He was a big get for the first one, and we didn’t know if Warner could coax a sequel to a comic book movie from the guy who directed Fury and wrote Training Day. On the other hand, Ayer has hinted about having a vision for several movies, saying, “You really have to be thinking three movies downrange and how today’s movie will impact more later-cycle projects.”
More importantly, what kind of crazy sh*t will Jared Leto be doing on set during the sequel? Maybe he’ll really shock the world and just knit everyone cozy sweaters.
Or perhaps not.
