It’s common for movies, particularly blockbusters, to undergo reshoots. They’re no longer synonymous with doomed productions. Ryan Reynolds slipped on his Deadpool costume months after principle photography wrapped, for instance, and reportedly the same thing is now happening with Suicide Squad. And, to bring it full circle, it might be because of Deadpool.
According to Birth.Movies.Death, Warner Bros. requested that director David Ayer add “more humor and lightness” into his “bad guys” showcase, the third film in the DC Extended Universe (after Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice). A source said “every joke in the movie is in that trailer,” which means there were five jokes in the entire thing. To be fair, that’s still five more than in Dawn of Justice. It’s not just fixing a scene here and there, either.
I have since spoken to more sources and I understand that the reshoots are happening right now, as recently as this week, and that they’re big – tens of millions of dollars big…
Hearing that WB is aware that they need to inject some fun into these movies – and that’s what I’m hearing is happening here, not that they’re inserting jokes left and right but that they’re beefing up fun character moments and interactions – can only mean good things for the future of the DC Movieverse. Batman v Superman made enough money to give $50 to every Martha in the world, but it was widely criticized by no-good critics for being a dreary bore. Meanwhile, Deadpool, which was more enjoyable to watch, is the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever, and it’s been generally well received by mom’s basement bloggers. We know Suicide Squad — which is supposed to be fun! — is going to be rated PG-13, but it might imitate Deadpool elsewhere.
In other words, hope you like Harley Quinn, because there’s going to be a lot of her (and the voices in her head).
