The newest Suicide Squad trailer, which premiered during the MTV Movie Awards, answered a lot of questions about the film. Will Harley Quinn be “vexing”? Yes. Will we see Ben Affleck’s Batman? Yes. Okay, but what if Superman had decided to fly down and grab the President right out of the Oval Office? Who would have stopped him? A stagnant box office, apparently. But there’s one important inquiry only the movie’s director, David Ayer, could answer: Is there any truth to the Deadpool effect rumors?
Last week, Birth.Movies.Death reported that Warner Bros. “requested that director David Ayer add ‘more humor and lightness’ into his ‘bad guys’ showcase.” The reshoots were “tens of millions of dollars big,” and “they’re beefing up fun character moments and interactions.” But Ayer, like Sam Worthington reboot Jai Courtney before him, calls bunk on the gossip. Bunk!
He tweeted:
#SuicideSquad “reshoots for humor” is silly. When a studio loves your movie and asks what else you want, go for it! #ThanksWB #moreaction

That sounds unlikely, to say the least. Movie studios typically don’t turn into Fry from Futurama. If Batman v Superman‘s bloated budget vs. Deadpool‘s miniscule-for-a-blockbuster budget should have taught executives anything, it’s that spending more doesn’t automatically mean bigger hit. Besides, if Warner Bros. already “loves” Suicide Squad, why would they change it?
Unless the answer is “more Harley Quinn,” I’m not buying it.
