‘Terminator 2’ Is Getting The 3D Re-Release Treatment In 2016

Like a lovable deadbeat dad, the Terminator franchise continues its pattern of following through on its “I’ll be back” promise every once in a while. The latest offering from the long running sci-fi action cinematic series? A digitally remastered 3D re-release of James Cameron’s amazing Terminator 2: Judgment Day.

The Hollywood Reporter says the plan to trot out a spiffed-up version of T2 is a global one with DMG Entertainment and Studiocanal pairing with Cameron for the project. The major market in this re-release’s sights? China. The Terminator franchise has been a success in the world’s most populous country and even gave Terminator: Genisys the $100 million plus box office gross that it couldn’t score in America. T2 has never enjoyed a proper theatrical release in China so this 3D unveiling will serve as its more formal introduction to Chinese cinemagoers.

This fancypants re-release comes as this masterpiece is on the cusp of turning 25 years old. It’s a milestone James Cameron acknowledged when discussing T2‘s upcoming 3D rebirth.

“Next year marks the 25th anniversary of Terminator 2 and that seemed like the perfect time to bring it back but this time in an all-new 3D version.

“If you’ve never seen it, this’ll be the version you want to see and remember.”

As you might suspect from the dude that made Avatar, Cameron is pretty bullish on the power of 3D. Terminator 2: Judgment Day isn’t the only film of his that’s been reintroduced as an updated 3D offering. In 2012, the beloved Billy Zane showcase Titanic was given a 3D re-release that pushed the film’s gross easily past the 2 billion dollar mark. China wasn’t nutty about Kate Winslet’s breasts appearing in the picture, but we suspect they might go easier on Arnold Schwarzenegger’s man-boobs.
