The movie trailer for Jem and the Holograms dropped yesterday… or should I say, the trailer for the abomination masquerading as a Jem and the Holograms movie. As many across the internet have angrily noted, Universal Pictures has basically gutted the source material and turned Jem from a music executive who transforms into a glam rock superstar with the aid of holographic earrings to a teenager whose YouTube uploads Bieber her into a surprise pop career.
That’s right. There’s no holograms. No glam rock. No Misfits, the evil band that’s constantly trying to take Jem and the Holograms down. Instead, we’ve got some generic ho hum tale of music stardom that’s been told a hundred times before. It’s enough to make a Jem fan throw a fit. Which they all did, and in surprisingly large numbers.
The studio is probably right to think that a Pitch Perfect clone has more profit potential than a faithful cartoon adaptation, but did they factor in the backlash that could bury the movie under a mountain of negativity? At least it’s entertaining and creative negativity. Let’s take a look at some of the funniest reactions to the Jem trailer, starting with William Shatner. Who knew Captain Kirk was a Holograms fan?
