When it comes to handling beloved film and comic franchises the director and team tend to fall under intense scrutiny over everything from dialogue to costume design. Shane Black’s upcoming Predator sequel will be no different, although Black doesn’t seem afraid to make changes to the iconic, menacing race of predatory aliens.
Black spoke about The Predator while promoting The Nice Guys and of course the design of the Predator costume came up. Black looks to put his own, unique take on the costume for the film, but doesn’t feel like it’s a bad thing or that it’ll upset fans too much.
“In The Predator, we’re doing a lot of upgrades to what you would consider to be the traditional Predator technology and look, but hopefully the story is what’s going to drag people in, not just the attention to the minutiae.”
This will be Black’s second big-budget comic book film, following Iron Man 3, where Black did catch some flak for changing the costume for the Mandarin, although not much. Interestingly enough, Black had an on-screen role in the original Predator film as Hawkins. He’s looking to bring the Predator franchise back into the spotlight with the 2018 film and hopefully won’t upset too many fans along the way to the series revival.
