Despite Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 star Chris Pratt’s wishes to the contrary, fans of Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle/Punisher in Daredevil season two won’t be seeing him again for some time. That’s because the anti-hero’s spinoff series won’t grace Netflix users’ television screens, computer monitors, and smartphones at least until 2018 — after Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and The Defenders have had their due. So, take the news that Westworld‘s Ben Barnes has been cast as a series regular, and a possible villain, with a great deal of skepticism.
Per a TV Line exclusive, Ben Barnes of Seventh Son (or OMG Jeff Bridges is slaying dragons) fame has joined the cast “in a series-regular role.” Who Barnes is supposedly playing, however, remains a mystery as the information TV Line has come by is “sketchy.” Despite this, the website surmises Barnes will be playing Bobby Saint, one of gangster Howard Saint‘s twin sons from the 2004 film adaptation starring Thomas Jane and John Travolta. (James Carpinello originated both the Bobby and John Saint roles.)
The problem with this, unfortunately, is that Marvel’s television universe at Netflix tends to stick as close as possible to the comics when developing its characters and stories. Since the Saints were created specifically for the 2004 Lionsgate film (and not derived from any known Marvel source material), that Barnes is playing Bobby Saint is highly unlikely. Yet this doesn’t mean his casting as a series regular is off the mark.
