The Purge has quietly become a hit horror series over the last few years. Since the unexpected success of the first movie, it’s slowly but steadily grown at the box office, building on the concept of a government-approved night, run every year, where all laws are suspended and all police stay indoors. It’s fertile ground, and it looks like the concept will be explored more with a TV series.
Cinemablend, which interviewed writer and director James DeMonaco, asked about a series and discovered he has it in the works, and that it’ll be an anthology series of sorts that get into why, exactly, an otherwise stable person would be running around with a shotgun and a pig mask:
The one thing you really can’t do in the films…is you can’t get into the nuance and complexity that would drive someone to commit a terrible act on this night… if you start on Purge Night, but you go back to show how people have gotten to where they are.
It’s an interesting way to take the franchise, especially as DeMonaco is unabashedly political in how he depicts the world of The Purge. The series, underneath the b-movie veneer, is very much a throwback to the socially conscious science fiction of the ’60s, and that sensibility paired with Peak TV should be interesting to watch. It’s not clear when we might see this series, but we’ll be eager to watch when it arrives.
