Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson chose to play villain and — in The Rock’s words — anti-hero Black Adam in the DC Comics adaptation of Shazam, even though he was initially offered the role of the hero, Shazam. In interviews he’s touched on why he picked the villain over the lead role, saying Black Adam has more layers and may eventually go at it with Superman or Batman despite New Line Cinema’s president saying Shazam would be separate from Zack Snyder’s Justice League films. (To be fair, that was New Line’s plan before The Rock signed on, so it doesn’t matter what they were planning before.)
At the press tour for San Andreas yesterday, The Rock spoke with Hey U Guys about his Black Adam role and his desire to return to WWE if the event would be a big enough surprise to be a treat for the fans. It would be hard to top his Ronda Rousey team-up at Wrestlemania 31, but we bet they could cook up something.
The Shazam and WWE talk starts about 1:50 into the video. Here’s what he said about the wrath he’s going to bring with Black Adam:
“He’s a unique type of villain. When you start off as a slave, you’re not in a good mood! There’s a heavy wrath that a lot of people have to pay. But when it’s fueled by a righteous anger if you will, like Black Adam, then you open up to what the character can be which I’m really excited about. That’s why he’s not just a straightforward bad guy.”
