Much has been made about the latest entry into Harry Potter canon, the play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. While most reviews of the production were overwhelmingly positive, there were some who were against the idea of Hermione Granger being played by a black woman. Author J.K. Rowling was quick to shut down those naysayers, and the original Hermione, actress Emma Watson, was always very vocal in her support of Noma Dumezweni taking on the role.
Watson was able to see Harry Potter and the Cursed Child on Wednesday, and wrote an effusive Facebook post about the production.
Yesterday I went to see the Cursed Child. I came in with no idea what to expect and it was AMAZING. Some things about the play were, I think, possibly even more beautiful than the films. Having seen it I felt more connected to Hermione and the stories than I have since Deathly Hallows came out, which was such a gift.
Are you also tearing up a little, fellow Hogwarts fans? Watson continued, specifically praising Dumezweni for continuing the story of Hermione and welcoming her back into the world of witches and wizards.
Meeting Noma and seeing her on stage was like meeting my older self and have her tell me everything was going to be alright, which as you can imagine was immensely comforting (and emotional)! The cast and crew welcomed me like I was family and Noma was everything I could ever hope she would be. She’s wonderful. The music is beautiful… I could go on…
While it’s hard to believe that the play could be better than (at least some of) the films, it’s wonderful to hear that Watson is still so enthusiastic about the franchise that put her on the map. The rest of us will just have to wait until the book is released on July 31.
