The First Trailer For ‘Valerian’ Is ‘The Fifth Element’ Turned Up To Eleven

Earlier today we had our first look at Rihanna as an alien stripper in Luc Besson’s Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets. Now the director of The Fifth Element has held a Facebook live event, and the trailer has arrived for everyone to take in, and man is there a lot to take in. But with Besson and an $180 million budget, you knew there would be some amazing world-building here.

Here’s the official synopsis, in case the video is moving too fast to catch it all:

Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) are special operatives for the government of the human territories charged with maintaining order throughout the universe. Valerian has more in mind than a professional relationship with his partner- blatantly chasing after her with propositions of romance. But his extensive history with women, and her traditional values, drive Laureline to continuously rebuff him.

Under directive from their Commander (Clive Owen), Valerian and Laureline embark on a mission to the breathtaking intergalactic city of Alpha, an ever-expanding metropolis comprised of thousands of different species from all four corners of the universe. Alpha’s seventeen million inhabitants have converged over time- uniting their talents, technology and resources for the betterment of all. Unfortunately, not everyone on Alpha shares in these same objectives; in fact, unseen forces are at work, placing our race in great danger.

EuropaCorp sent us some pictures ahead of the trailer today. The first is the intergalactic city Alpha, population over 17 million. The second is the “Big Market […], the largest commerce center both on Alpha and in the universe. With over one million stores, the market is a massive tourist attraction which exists in alternate dimension.”

Take that, Mall Of America! Oh, you still have a Snoopy roller coaster? Well, that’s pretty cool too, I guess.

Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets opens July 21st, 2017.
