Vivica A. Fox, who played the heroic stripper Jasmine Dubrow in Independence Day, is officially on board for another alien battle in the sequel. She and director Roland Emmerich released announcements on Twitter to confirm the news. Earlier this month, Emmerich also revealed that Jessie Usher would be playing the grown-up version of Jasmine’s son from the original, so that leaves just Will Smith as the sole member of the Hiller-Dubrow family to hold out. And he says he isn’t interested in coming back, so does that mean his character is dead? Maybe he’ll just be at a barbecue, like the one he should have been at in the first movie.
While it looks like Smith is out, Jeff Goldblum is definitely confirmed for a return and Liam Hemsworth and Charlotte Gainsbourg (Nymphomaniac) will be coming along for the ride. Coming Soon also says that there’s a chance that President Whitmore himself Bill Pullman might also come back, but that seems to be coming with a grain of salt.
All I can think is that if one family from the original has to be torn apart, can’t they salvage another one and have Margaret Colin come back to play Connie Spano, the wife with whom Goldblum’s character David Levinson beautifully reunited? She was so badass.
Also badass? Mae Whitman, who played the little, tiny First Daughter. She’s all grown up and ready to kick some ass, and I would kill to see that.
