Comedian Mike Birbiglia is definitely having his moment. Supporting roles in Trainwreck and Orange is the New Black (as well as a very cool little movie with a massive cast from last year called Digging For Fire which you probably didn’t see, but should soon seek out) have familiarized him to audiences. And he proved that he’s deft and skilled as a filmmaker with his 2012 directorial debut Sleepwalk With Me.
This summer, his latest directing project will arrive in theaters and not only does he has some very solid support in his corner, the movie killed at SXSW. Don’t Think Twice is about a close-knit New York improv troupe which starts to potentially take on water when other members land auditions with a weekly, Saturday Night Live-style comedy show. There are funny names all over the place here, including Keegan-Michael Key, Gillian Jacobs, Kate Micucci, Tami Sagher and Chris Gethard. This American Life creator Ira Glass also serves as a producer.
The trailer, which debuted at the end of last week, looks as though the movie will bring a strong sense of familiarity with not just the improv world but what it’s like to deal with the potential of “making it,” how common goals among a group a creative people can diverge and why and how professional jealously and rivalries come from unexpected places. And Birbiglia, proven as a smart, witty storyteller, is right in the middle of it all.
Don’t Think Twice hits theaters on July 22. Check out the trailer up top.
