Every generation gets the Son in Law it deserves. Well, that’s not entirely true, buu-ddy, but if you like dad vs. daughter’s boyfriend culture clash laugh-em-ups, then the green band trailer nestled above should satisfy your needs. Especially since it features Bryan Cranston and James Franco duking it out.
The upcoming comedy Why Him? stars Cranston as a buttoned-up dad with a daughter who’s dating a Silicon Valley goober that looks alarmingly like Franco. Unsurprisingly, unlike what Nobel Peace Prize winners Paula Abdul and MC Skat Kat have taught us, these opposites appear to NOT attract. Cranston’s protective dad philosophy is challenged a bit thanks to foul language, zany physical comedy and a stoned Megan Mullally moving her bum in a style that is twerk-adjacent. Franco’s a free spirit, dude. (Or a sociopath.) Will Cranston loosen up and go with the flow, or is he in danger of losing his family to Franco?
I Love You, Man director/co-writer John Hamburg has a healthy bit of experience with comedies about family conflict. All three Parents/Fockers films feature a screenwriting credit for Hamburg, so that will either read as a positive or a negative depending on your mileage with the franchise. Why Him? is due out in theaters on December 25 with Cranston, Franco, Mullally, Zoey Deutch, Griffin Gluck and Keegan Michael-Key among the cast.
