The last time we saw Zorro in a movie theater was in 2005’s The Legend of Zorro with Antonio Banderas playing the mythological hero. The film wasn’t as good as the previous Mask of Zorro, but the legendary figure isn’t done with movies just yet. Hollywood Reporter is reporting that a new iteration of Zorro is in the works, but this time the sword-fighting rascal is getting ready to subdue bad guys in a post-apocalyptic wasteland.
Zorro Reborn has been percolating for 15 years, but now it has new financiers. Gael Garcia Bernal and Bryan Singer were previously attached to the long ruminating project, but the film has since moved on. There’s no word yet on who will be helming the film, but Lantica Media and Sobini Films have picked up the movie with plans of beginning production in 2016. Zorro originated in 1919 and has since seen projects on TV as well as the big screen. With the success of Mad Max, it’ll be interesting to see the fabled hero brought to theaters in a new setting. We’ll keep you abreast of more Zorro news as the film develops.
