As part of One Direction, Harry Styles toured the world and tore down arenas as a member of the band, but he finally hit the stage for the first time as a solo act on Saturday and he had one hell of a trick up his sleeve. Harry took Kanye West’s The Life Of Pablo opener “Ultralight Beam” and turned it into a somber, rock ballad much to the delight of the crowd.
Harry announced the surprise show early Saturday, and tickets were limited to see him rock his first solo show at Garage Club in London. The 23-year-old was promoting his new, delightful self-titled album with the show, and maybe, just maybe the inclusion of the Yeezy track was a slight jab at his ex-girlfriend Taylor Swift. Taylor’s history with Kanye is, of course, eventful and he didn’t go the full on “Famous” route, but this might have been a more subtle approach to any sort of dig at Taylor. Well, he probably performed “Two Ghosts,” which is so clearly about her that he’s having trouble denying it.
Harry is set to kick of his first solo worldwide tour this September in San Francisco, and he’ll be on the road all fall until he wraps up the Harry Styles Live On Tour in Tokyo on December 8th.
