Tropicana Field in Tampa is a Twilight Zone of sorts when it comes to finding baseballs. The domed structure is built in such a way that balls hit the rafters all the time, deflecting them in God knows what direction. That’s probably what happened here in Friday night’s game between the Rays and Royals.
Here we have Rays outfield Kevin Kiermaier running for the center field wall, scaling it like a spider monkey, striking a sassy pose and then watching helplessly as the ball falls harmlessly in front of him. All he could do was gaze off in the distance, one leg perched high, and get freakin’ existential about what just happened.
You see, Kiermaier is like all of us. We are all Kiermaier. Just hoping to catch a ball, only to find that it’s dropped in the place we least expect.
