For two seasons, or two seasons minus the pilot, AMC’s The Killing was a soggy, misleading punching bag for critics and viewers, who wanted answers about Rosie Larsen’s murder, but instead were treated to dead-end leads, non-clever twists, a dreary self-seriousness that even Washington state’s most depressed residents were fed up with, and the killer was trees, right? So obviously it’s coming back for season three.
Though neither the cabler nor producer Fox Television Studios would confirm, showrunner Veena Sud and exec producers Dawn Prestwich and Nicole Yorkin went back to the writers’ room this week to begin work on a third season of the moody drama.
The new season will likely launch in late May, with production set to begin in a few months. Earlier reports had the drama also being made available on Netflix following its initial run on AMC, but those negotiations have not yet been finalized. Series, starring Mireille Enos and Joel Kinnaman as a pair of Seattle cops trying to solve the murder of a high school girl, was canceled in July. However, rumors persisted that the show might be revived on Netflix or another alternative platform. The lingering interest in Killing from outside outlets likely helped convince AMC to give the show a second look. (Via)
The show pulled in decent ratings, AMC needs a fourth show (especially with Breaking Bad ending soon), and Mireille Enos (World War Z) and Joel Kinnaman (RoboCop) were two intriguing, now well-known leads whose careers have taken off since 2011, so it’s understandable why it’s coming back, assuming producers can convince Enos and Kinnaman to return. And we’ll all hate watch it, probably, and wonder how it can possibly resurrect itself now that its central premise has been answered, and we’ll have learned nothing and maybe Rosie will come back as a zombie? The crossover episode worked beautifully for Full House and Family Matters, so why it can’t work for The Killing and The Walking Dead, too? Chris Hardwick can appear at an inappropriate time during a commercial break to give us “tonight’s episode hashtag, #worstgriefpornever.” CAN’T WAIT.
