Everyone shut up, I have important news. Pitchfork has a joint interview with R. Kelly and Phoenix’s Thomas Mars up on their site today, and they asked the two of them some questions, and R. Kelly said he’s making a country album, and then this happened.
Pitchfork: Thomas, how long have you been an R. Kelly fan?
TM: I remember being in my apartment in Paris and watching “Trapped in the Closet”– it was the best TV experience of my life. It just came out of nowhere. I’d never seen anything like it before. I watched it again and again. I remember dreaming about the water drop– it stayed with me for a while. I watched it with my father-in-law [Francis Ford Coppola] once and I remember him sitting there in silence for 10 minutes and then saying, “This is incredible.”
Francis Ford Coppola, the director of The Godfather, watched R. Kelly’s batsh*t hip-hopera “Trapped in the Closet” (which features both the line “With a spatula in her hand … like that’s gonna do something against them guns, it’s Rosie, the nosy neighbor,” and a little person hiding in a cabinet, jumping out, then crapping his pants when someone pulls a gun on him), and then after it was over, Francis Ford Coppola, who also directed The Godfather: Part II and Apocalypse Now, sat in silence for 10 minutes — 10 MINUTES — before saying, “This is incredible.”
I want this to be true. I need this to be true.
