Yesterday someone posted the video above to Reddit under the headline, “Samsung ad featuring possibly the world’s worst actors.” After watching the video, I have to agree — that’s some pretty sh*tty acting right there. It’s almost like the actors were trying to be sh*tty, in fact. Well, as it turns out, they apparently were.
According to the Korean-born actor in the spot — who jumped into the Reddit comment thread to defend himself — the actors in the commercial were directed to be robotic because it was made for a Korean audience and that’s apparently the style of acting that’s popular in that part of the world now, or something.
They ask us to exaggerate since many Korean people feel thats how we ‘naturally’ act (most people here are not very expressive). the script is brutal. written by non-native english speakers, and sometimes the PD or director won’t even take our suggestions to change some parts so they sound like something a normal native english speaker would say. [I]ts a promotional video, not a tv commercial, meaning it will be shown at conventions and expos and in-house. most of the people watching it are korean and thats why they make us do all of the above.
Meanwhile, Samsung attorneys discovered the guy’s comments on the thread and went after him, for some reason…
“The agency i did that job through called me and frantically asked me to delete all my comments on reddit since samsung was threatening them with legal action if i didnt,” he said. “[A]pparently they really want to suppress it, though i cant understand why. Streisand effect makes a lot of sense lol.”
Apparently Samsung is determined to prevent the world from knowing that the actors in its commercials are intentionally terrible. We’re here to make sure that the world does know. You’re welcome, world!
