People in Philadelphia say “goddamn it” a whole lot, so much so that my husband has in the past accused me of sounding like a character from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. (To be fair, he also grew up in Southeastern Pennsylvania, but further away from Philadelphia and had never even heard the word “jawn” before he met me, so disqualified.) At any rate, It’s Always Sunny creator Rob McElhenney also hails from Philly (as well as Danny DeVito spending a good amount of time here as a young comedian and performer), which is why I think the phrase has been so ingrained in the series.
Still, though: Someone went through and complied every “goddamn it” from seasons one through nine, and it tallies up to a breathtaking six-and-a-half minutes. Six-and-a-half minutes! Basically, you could send your kid to college if you had a dime for every time a character on It’s Always Sunny says “goddamn it.”
