Wednesday’s attack on French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo shocked the globe and left 12 dead and countless injured. In the aftermath, many were left angry and confused, while others chose to carry on in defiance of what they saw as attempt to quiet speech by extremists.
Many have already paid tribute to those fallen and the late night hosts are no different. Conan was the first to release a clip, by others like Jon Stewart also paid tribute:
“In this country, we take it for granted it’s our right to poke fun at the untouchable or the sacred, but today’s tragedy in Paris reminds us, very viscerally, that it’s a right some people are forced to die for”
O’Brien really provides a good statement on what free speech means to people around the globe and the risks it carries at times. We do take it for granted, I certainly know I do. I have a lot of freedom to say what I’d like on numerous platforms, and the risks of facing repercussions is low.
The events we all saw happen in Paris are nothing new and have happened before, sometimes with different players involved. I’m not sure why it happens or what is in the mind of the people doing the deeds, I just know that it adds a certain layer that we seem to forget.
