Bill Nye has been promoting science and logical thought in pop culture ever since his stand-up act was turned into the beloved series Bill Nye the Science Guy. He’s who CNN brings in to discuss science, usually to the woe of the climate change deniers he’s inevitably pitted against, and will take the time to offer some more adult science discussion than Disney let him get into in the ’90s. And all that has combined to return Nye to TV, this time with a talk show.
According to IndieWire, Netflix has greenlighted Bill Nye Saves the World, which is more or less Nye analyzing the use, and misuse, of science in politics and pop culture. Each episode will tackle a particular topic, and Nye will have guests on to break out what we think and whether that’s accurate or flawed. Spoiler alert: It’s probably horribly flawed. Nye will also perform scientific demonstrations and experiments, because really that’s what everyone will flip it on for.
Whether this show clicks or not will probably depend on the guests. Netflix has experimented with streaming talk shows before, notably Chelsea, starring Chelsea Handler, which was just renewed for a 90-episode second season. But Nye’s a much different kind of performer, so we’ll see just how his show comes together in 2017. If nothing else, hopefully he’ll be able to torment Ed Begley Jr. again.
