CBS Orders Pilots For Reboots Of ‘Magnum P.I.’ And ‘Cagney And Lacey’

CBS

The past. Have you heard of it? Television has and they’re quite fond of it. We live at a time where reboots, returns and revivals are still on trend with executive bigwigs and the like. CBS, who announced Murphy Brown‘s surprise return earlier in the month, has ordered pilots with updated takes on two ’80s pop culture staples.

Variety reports reboots of Cagney and Lacey and Magnum P.I. are among the network’s six pilots ordered for the 2018-2019 season. Magnum P.I. is being written and executive produced by Peter Lenkov who has served as a writer/producer for the CBS reboots of Hawaii Five-O and MacGyver, so consider that a clue as to how the newly ordered reboots will operate.

Cagney and Lacey, the ’80s police procedural that served as an Emmy factory for its leads Sharon Gless and Tyne Daly, shifts its setting from New York to Los Angeles while keeping the detective element and core partnership of its source material.

The reboot of Magnum P.I. sees a tweaked version of his origin with the new titular Magnum as an ex-Navy SEAL returning home to Hawaii after serving in Afghanistan. No word yet on if a Tom Selleck style mustache is joining the party. If Archer can recognize this, so should CBS.
