It’s always striking to see Game of Thrones actors out of their Seven Kingdoms getups, but Emilia Clarke continues to be one of the most stark divergences from her character. Whether she’s giggling with Matt LeBlanc on The Graham Norton Show or jamming out to Tupac, Clarke seems like the polar opposite of the Mother of Dragons and Breaker of Chains. Daenerys may be a brooder, but Clarke is all sunshine.
In a recent video for Teen Vogue, Clarke sat down to offer some advice to her 18-year-old self, and if you think that this only applies to the young women in the audience, you would be wrong. After explaining right off the bat that her life’s dream is actually possible, Clarke breaks down some seriously helpful views on things like body image and heartbreak.
“You are not as fat as you think you are. There’s some women who look some way and there are other women who look another way, like a whole other way. And the way that the other women look, people love because they look like women.”
“You’re going to feel some serious heartbreak… And the reason why it’s going to hurt so much, it’s because that heartbreak is going to make you doubt yourself. You put yourself out on a plate and you bare everything, and someone says they don’t really like that. So, that makes your feel like you’re not worth it. But you are, and there will be lots of people who will tell you you are worth it.”
All in all, it’s a sweet video with an uplifting message, and really proves what a great actress Clarke is. Whether she’s offering up earnest advice that it’s ok to drink Diet Coke at parties or threatening mass slaughter in Dothraki, she nails it every time.
