'Gotham' Casts Its Riddler, Announces It On April Fools To Keep Us Guessing

I hate when real news breaks on April Fools’ Day, because it leaves us wondering if it’s real or if a news outlet is just bad at understanding what a successful parody entails. It’s with that in mind that we’re trusting Entertainment Weekly when they say Cory Michael Smith will play Edward Nashton (AKA Edward Nygma, The Riddler) in Fox’s Gotham TV series.

EW also says he’ll be a forensic scientist in the Gotham City Police Department:

He’s tagged as guest star in the pilot with an option to expand into a series regular. […] Nygma is a brilliant young forensic scientist working for Gotham PD and a penchant for speaking in… rather cryptic language. Inquisitive, eccentric and outgoing — yet socially awkward — he wants to be liked, but he doesn’t quite know how.

Nashton/Nygma was a criminal profiler and informant for the GCPD in his early career, so at least they’re close to the comic. Maybe he can suss out where Gordon’s mustache went.

As for Cory Michael Smith, he hasn’t been in much yet. You probably don’t even recognize him in the picture above. Yes, that’s The Riddler with Daenerys Targaryen and a cat. The sound you’re hearing is the launching of a million fan fics.
