Luke Burbank works in media, is a radio host, and is generally a well-respected and competent media professional. He is also, apparently, one of those people who thinks your hobby is stupid if it happens to be something he doesn’t understand or personally dislikes.

As found by Kotaku, Burbank had a segment on Sunday about Amazon’s billion-dollar purchase of Twitch. He doesn’t understand the appeal of Twitch, which, to be fair, can be hard to explain, even to people who like video games.

Of course, this does raise the question as to why he brought up the topic in the first place on CBS Sunday Morning. It’s not like anybody watching broadcast TV at 10am on a Sunday knows, or cares, about Twitch. Nor is this exactly recent news, either.

Nonetheless, he has an opinion about it, that opinion being clearly there’s something wrong with you for enjoying something Luke Burbank does not understand. In the space of two minutes and thirty seconds, Burbank manages to be profoundly condescending to pretty much anybody who owns a game console, as he magnanimously explains “real life” to us in technical terms like “3D.” He ends with demanding you damn kids go do something Luke Burbank judges is a proper use of your time, like staring at some guy who doesn’t know what he’s talking about on television. I’m a little surprised he doesn’t just go full Ogre towards the end.

Granted, this is not the stupidest thing said on a television network about video games this year. Still, the tone grates, and to be honest, one wonders why Burbank even bothered. If you don’t care about something, and you don’t understand it… wouldn’t it behoove you to find another topic for your network television puff piece?
