The Lena Dunham-Odell Beckham Jr. controversy has taken on a life of its own, but the Girls creator has taken a step towards burying the issue once and for all. For the uninitiated, Dunham engaged in a back-and-forth interview with comedian and actress Amy Schumer and, within that conversation, she had this to say about the New York Giants wide receiver:
“You and I were literally sitting across from each other at the Met Ball, and it was so surreal to get to do that. I was sitting next to Odell Beckham Jr., and it was so amazing because it was like he looked at me and he determined I was not the shape of a woman by his standards… It wasn’t mean—he just seemed confused…The vibe was very much like, ‘Do I want to f*ck it? Is it wearing a…yep, it’s wearing a tuxedo. I’m going to go back to my cell phone.’ It was like we were forced to be together, and he literally was scrolling Instagram rather than have to look at a woman in a bow tie.”
With haste, the internet descended on Dunham and, initially, she chose to lash out at the “outrage machine” in defense of her comments. With a bit of time in which to step back, though, Dunham has now issued the following apology:

There is plenty to decipher within the contents of the apology, but Dunham indicates that she and Beckham Jr. “have never met” and delivers the centerpiece of her regret by saying “the fact is I don’t know about his state of mind (I don’t know a lot of things) and I shouldn’t have acted like I did.” It remains to be seen how quickly this controversy will fade to the background, but Dunham has (finally) apologized and that should hasten the process.
