One of the subtle ways Twin Peaks worked its magic was through its score. Angelo Badalamenti wove specific themes and motifs throughout the score that both carried the scene and subtly reminded the audience of what the characters were really thinking. Laura’s theme, in particular, made her a presence in the show without ever putting her on screen, and this teaser hints that while her theme may have changed, she’s still on everyone’s mind.
Twin Peaks, if you’re unfamiliar, unfolds in the wake of the death of Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee), beauty queen, straight A student, and kind soul. Supposedly. As Agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) investigates Laura and the strange happenings of the town she lives in, much more about her comes to the surface.
The teaser is simply Badalamenti at work, performing a different take on Laura’s theme, as the footage floats through trees and Laura’s picture appears in the background. Still, if you’re a fan of the show, the music will get you; that motif was woven all throughout the show, right up until the end. Laura will be back in person, too, as Sheryl Lee has confirmed she’ll be appearing in the series, although, of course, in what capacity is up in the air. Let’s not forget she died in the first episode only to come back as her own cousin. We’ll see what David Lynch has for us in 2017.
