Men in Black 3 has a new international trailer, and I bet you’re all super excited about it. “I’ve spent the last ten years since Men in Black 2 DESPERATELY HOPING they’d make a third Men in Black movie based on an idea from Will Smith,” you’re always saying. Well hooray, here it is! And since it took ten years, you can bet it will be super polished, right?
Barry also revealed he started shooting the movie without a finished script which made the whole process more difficult.
“We knew starting the movie that we didn’t have a finished second or third act. Was it responsible? The answer is, if the movie does as well as I think it will, it was genius. If it’s a total failure, then it was a really stupid idea,” he told Empire magazine.
“Will calls me Baz. When we were shooting Men In Black II (in 2002), one night he said ‘Hey Baz, I think I have an idea for number three’.
“The basic idea was that Will’s character, Agent J, would have to go back into the past to save his partner. It allowed the movie to take place in another era, and us to learn more about Tommy Lee Jones’ character.
“But it turned out to be a very long process of development, mainly because of the knotting issues of time travel, the time travel thing was really hard.”
So the idea was, “And then my character travels back in time for some reason?” Wasn’t that Homer’s exact script idea in an episode of The Simpsons? Of course, in Homer’s version, Will Smith was a killer robot driving instructor and Tommy Lee Jones was a talking pie, but that’s neither here nor there. I suppose the important thing to remember is that THIS SPRING, WILL SMITH is going… BLACK in time!
Okay, okay, in all seriousness, I did enjoy Bill Hader playing Andy Warhol. However, at the beginning of the trailer, I think if there’s anyone you wouldn’t have to explain a gigantic killer catfish to, it’d be a crowd of Asians in Chinatown. I used to live in Chinatown, stuff like that happens there every day. The only rule is “no pictures.”
