I remember Sonic the Hedgehog mostly as a free video game that came with Sega Genesis and was sort of second-rate Mario Bros, but if Sony has their way, it’s going to become a full-fledged movie franchise pumping out one movie per year†. C’mon, only Tyler Perry maintains that high an output.
Sony Pictures Entertainment has teamed with SEGA Sammy Group division Marza Animation Planet to develop a hybrid/live action and CG-animated feature film based on the Sonic The Hedgehog video game series. The film will be scripted by Evan Susser and Van Robichaux.
“SEGA Sammy Group division Marza Animation Planet” keeps rolling around in my head like some future dystopia military unit.
The plan is to release one movie per year. Pic will focus on Sonic’s rivalry with characters from the vidgame, including his evil nemesis Dr. Eggman.
Anyone who remembers “Dr. Eggman” was Sonic the Hedgehog’s nemesis, raise your hand. Okay, now come forward to receive your melvin.
Said Sony Pictures production president Hannah Minghella: “There are limitless stories to tell with a character like Sonic the Hedgehog, and a built-in international fan base. Along with our wonderful creative partners at Marza, we’re looking to capture everything that generations of fans know and love about Sonic while also growing his audience wider than ever before.”
Yep, with a blue hedgehog that runs fast, the options are literally limitless. I’m taking pretty much this entire story as a direct challenge to the English language. Say what you will about the French, at least there they’d consider doling out fines for crap like this.
†Update: Jeff Sneider from TheWrap says the press release is supposed to mean one Sonic movie, then one movie a year from Sony and Marza – not necessarily all Sonic movies – even though the Deadline story makes it sound like they’re making a Sonic movie every year. Sorry, Sony didn’t send me this press release directly, probably because they knew I’d just make fun of it.
