Dear Eric Hirshberg…really?! You’re invoking serious war movies and complaining people respect those more than “Call of Duty”? You really want to have this conversation? OK, let’s have this conversation.
First, let me say that I don’t agree with anybody insisting “Modern Warfare 3″ is somehow exploiting the modern geopolitical situation, especially since “Modern Warfare 3″ uses a form of geopolitics that only exist in ’80s action movies and Tom Clancy novels. But at the same time, insisting that you deserve the level of respect of, say, a “Hurt Locker” is irritating, because pure and simple, your game doesn’t deserve it.
Look, the game is solid, Hirshberg, but the story is terrible. When I reviewed the game, I didn’t call the story “insulting” as a synonym for bad: I was literally wondering how stupid and removed from the news your writing staff thought I was. Your players are not morons, Eric. They can look at Google News. They may not be hugely politically motivated, but they know what’s going on in the world.
You want people to respect you? Write a story that doesn’t make them want to punch the writer in the face. That simple.
