Receiver: An FPS Roguelike With Realistic Gun Physics

Here’s a game you don’t see every day.

“Receiver”, built for a programmer’s challenge where you build an FPS in seven days, is built around three concepts. The first is that the gun you have, a Colt 1911 A1, is realistically depicted: you have to pull the magazine out to see how many bullets you have, and pull the slide half-way to ensure you have a bullet in the chamber, for example.

The second idea is that it’s a roguelike, at least in mechanics: the entire game is rebuilt every time you die. Oh, and also like a roguelike, when you die, that’s it.

It’s a pretty fascinating experiment, and it costs $5 to download and play. Having tried it out, it’s more fascinating than its seemingly simple parts would suggest, and engaging in some very surprising way. I’m pretty sure this won’t be the last we see of this concept from Wolfire. A video exploring the mechanics in more detail under the jump.
