Okay, Sure: Scientists Teach Robots To Lie Like Squirrels

By 12.06.12

“Yes, of course I’ll always love you. Now give me the peanut…”

Scientists at Georgia Tech are trying to teach robots to lie. Why? Uhhhh, I’m not sure. Maybe one of the researchers is up on a murder charge and needs a lying robot to outwit Matlock on the stand? Yeah, let’s go with that.

Of course you have to start simple, so for now the researchers are looking towards one of nature’s greatest a–holes, the squirrel, for inspiration. A squirrel’s entire life revolves around hoarding food. They store all their nuts and seeds in secret caches, but they also have fake caches meant to throw their thieving squirrel brethren off their tracks. It’s the rare natural case of an animal consciously making s–t up to fool one of their own kind — a.k.a. being a furry little liar.

The researchers have successfully taught robots this deceptive squirrel routine. Hit the jump for a video…

Come on guys, you couldn’t even put a furry tail on your “squirrel robot”? Showmanship, showmanship.
