Pull List: Comics Coming Out 3/6/13

What awaits you on the shelves today? We lay out what’s coming, as well as offer reviews of today’s books from DC, Dark Horse, IDW, and Valiant.

  • DC releases a collected edition of The Shade, finishes Rorschach, Human Bomb, and Lot 13, and has more Green Arrow, Green Lantern, Swamp Thing, Animal Man, and Insurgent, which is becoming an enjoyable thriller.
  • Marvel launches Age of Ultron, finishes Road To Oz, and has more Superior Spider-Man, Avengers, and All-New X-Men.
  • Image launches Lost Vegas and Sex, plus has more of Brian Wood’s Mara, Snapshot, Great Pacific, and Bedlam. It’s a heavy Image week for a lot of us!
  • Dark Horse wraps up Colder and Hellboy In Hell, and has more 47 Ronin.
  • IDW has more Transformers and My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic.
  • And Boom! has more Planet of the Apes and Hypernaturals.

Reviews

The Shade

Starman was one of the best books of the 1990s, and in many ways defined DC Comics. It was a book as much about texture and family as it was about superheroes and legacies, and it remains one of James Robinson’s finest works.

He returns to it with this collected miniseries, but this isn’t Starman. It’s a clever mix of occult horror story and international espionage thriller, laced with humor. And it’s a hoot to read. If you love Starman, or just enjoy stories starring a smart anti-hero, this is the place

Superman #17

H’El On Earth wraps up with a massive payoff that we won’t spoil here. Scott Lobdell is a solid Superman writer, and he actually gives Superman a sarcastic, smart-assed bent that serves the character well. Kenneth Rocafort has a blast with the epic scale of the story, especially depicting the Oracle. Overall, although the crossover took a while, this is a fun and interesting conclusion.

Ame-Comi Girls #1

Justin Grey and Jimmy Palmiotti put together an all-female DCU story with art from Eduardo Francisco. The real fun in this book, beyond Francisco teetering on the verge of cheesecake, is Palmiotti and Grey uncorking a full-on superhero story complete with robots living in the center of the Earth, Batgirl using an app to derail an alien spaceship, and a surprisingly light-hearted sense of humor. It’s a goofy book, but it’s a lot of fun, and worth giving a read if you haven’t been following it digitally.

Swamp Thing #18

We talk a lot about Scott Snyder’s Batman around here, and for excellent reason, but he’s also had a great run on Swamp Thing, and this issue closes the Rotworld crossover with a genuinely heartbreaking moment for Alec Holland that shows Snyder’s more tragic and romantic side. It’s a change of pace, and one worth reading.

Animal Man #18

Jeff Lemire, on the other hand, just wants to make you cry. That’s all we’ll say about this issue; the cover tells you flat-out something ugly is going to happen, but if you’ve been following the book, it’s a nasty gut-punch that hits Buddy in the worst place possible.

Before Watchmen: Rorschach #4

Brian Azzarello finishes this miniseries with an… unexpected conclusion. While this series has largely been a crime story, Azzarello shifts gears here and explores the difference between the darkness inside of someone like Rorschach and the darkness of a common criminal. In some ways, especially with Lee Bermejo’s taste for the gnarled and grotesque, it feels like a better-considered version of Azzarello’s Joker one-shot. It takes what was a solid if conventional book and elevates it into something more interesting, and more worthy of the source material.

Green Arrow #18

Jeff Lemire continues his run on this book with a fun, zippy issue that reveals a lot of secrets while offering still more. Meanwhile, Andrea Sorrentino gives this book some of his best art. Overall, this new direction is really improving the book, and if you haven’t checked it out yet, now would definitely be the time.

Green Lantern #18

Geoff Johns is going to be wrapping up his run on this book soon, and you can tell he’s crossing certain things off his bucket list, including giving Sinestro what-for. Meanwhile, Szymon Kudranski, Ardian Syaf, and Mark Irwin fairly creatively juggle two very different types of art to create two very distinct plotlines, and it stands out considerably. If you like unique art, or want to see Sinestro learn not to attack Simon Baz the hard way, check this book out.

Also, it must be said that I haven’t laughed harder at a title to a comic this year. Let’s just say Johns knows his pop culture references and leave it at that.

47 Ronin #3

Stan Sakai and Mike Richardson are doing a superb job of bringing out the drama in this national legend. The book is a slow burn, but its focus on detail and personal drama makes it a unique, quiet work well worth the purchase.

Colder #5

Paul Tobin and Juan Ferreyra bring their excellent horror miniseries to a close. Ferreyra draws some of his best work in the series here, mixing up layouts and colors to give the book the epic mind-screw pay-off Tobin writes for the script. It’s just warped and disturbing enough to be troubling while also serving as realistic enough to make the weird parts even creepier.

In short, it’s a creative, creepy horror book, and we hope there’s more on the way.

Hellboy In Hell #4

This story is largely setting up more Hellboy comics to come, but as this odd take on A Christmas Carol comes to a close, it has a fairly touching ending when Hellboy gets something resembling peace. For now, anyway. Don’t expect this to last.

Star Wars: Dark Times #2

You have to love a book that opens with Darth Vader beating up a guy in a wheelchair. Randy Stradley understands what makes Vader a great villain, and it shows all throughout this book. Gabriel Guzman does a good job keeping the art grounded and detailed, and does a good job with action. And, again, Vader acts like a villain again.

Willow #5

Christos Gage and Jeff Parker do a good job of writing a book that feels like a Buffy episode. Willow comes to a personal realization in this story that makes sense within the character, and helps push her to new points of growth.

That said, I’m noticing the Buffy books are a bit too enamored of bringing back old foes. Hopefully Dark Horse is allowed to shake it up a bit more in the future.

Archie: The Best Of Dan DeCarlo Vol. 4

IDW has been doing important work preserving the history of comic book art with their anthologies, and this is no exception: Dan DeCarlo’s work is beautifully reproduced.

Beyond that, it’s honestly a bit odd to read because, well, these were innocent little kid’s comics, and literally the first story is about Betty and Veronica covering up a fender-bender because otherwise Archie will be able to yell at them about how much women drivers stink. So story-wise, it’s an odd little time capsule… but man was the art gorgeous.

Ditko’s Monsters: Gorgo

This collection of rarities focused on the comics based around the giant monster movie Gorgo! is required reading for kaiju fans. The book not only reproduces Ditko’s work on the comic in detail, it also contains rare press materials and a fairly complete history of the movie. Granted, they’re comics of their era, but it’s an informative and fun look at an odd intersection of a comic book giant and a pop culture oddity.

G.I. Joe #188

Larry Hama’s run on G.I. Joe in the ’80s is rightly remembered as great comics, and his run on IDW’s book shows he’s still got it and then some. S.L. Gallant and Gary Erskine deliver solid art, with good action scenes, but it’s really all about the story with this, and it’s a lot of fun.

Jinnrise #3

Sohaib Awan’s story of genies fighting horse aliens is every bit as pulpy and silly as the concept promises, but this pulpy story is actually worth getting because it’s a standalone issue that serves as a prequel to the main book.

It’s high pulp in the best sense, and arguably the best issue of the book so far. And Tony Vassallo’s art is appropriately ’90s, making this a lot of fun for those of us who grew up then.

KISS #8

Tom Waltz and Kenneth Loh have turned what looked like a terrible book on paper into something entertainingly campy and ridiculous. The concept of the members of Kiss as the avatars of a celestial power is inherently silly but the book is amusingly self-aware and willing to goof on itself enough that it becomes a fun slice of cheese. If you like KISS, or are in the mood for something goofy, this will suit you nicely.

My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic #4

Katie Cook and Andy Price continue their hilarious run on this series with, among other things, My Little Pony versions of Mola Ram and Pennywise. And includes a reference to Ghostbusters. If this book doesn’t make you laugh, you possibly have no detectable sense of humor.

Transformers #18
Transformers Spotlight: Bumblebee

James Roberts pulls a fairly clever stunt here, using the robotic nature of Transformers to riff on memory and tell a story in flashback. Alex Milne, meanwhile, mixes anime style and Transformers design quite well. While this is a book more for the hardcore fan than general readers, it’s a solidly written and drawn book, and surprisingly compelling.

This solo story is a pretty entertaining look at a less-than-beloved Autobot in some quarters courtesy of John Barber on story and David Daza on art. If nothing else, it makes you appreciate Bumblebee a little bit more.

Shadowman #5

This book is mostly set up, but Justin Jordan has done such a good job with this book that one can forgive the occasional slow patch. Helping matters considerably is Lee Garbett and Roberto Del La Torre handing in a good mix of art, and the return of Doctor Mirage. This book has a lot of promise, to say the least, and we’re looking forward to the next issue.
