I DEMAND A STORYLINE EXPLANATION FOR THIS!
As those who played Super Smash Bros. Brawl will recall, that game had quite the elaborate, cutscene-packed, part platformer, part fighter story mode called The Subspace Emissary. Well, don’t expect anything like that in the next Smash Bros. game!
Honestly, I won’t miss it that much. I liked that the Subspace Emissary gave some context to why all these characters were meeting up and fighting, but it wasn’t always that fun. That said, the stated reason why there won’t be a Subspace Emissary-like story mode in the next Smash Bros. game is just, well, weird…
According to Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai, the next Smash Bros. won’t have a story mode because, dammit, the Internet exists!
“Unfortunately, the (Subspace Emissary) movie scenes we worked hard to create were uploaded onto the internet. You can only truly wow a player the first time he sees a cutscene. I felt if players saw the cutscenes outside of the game, they would no longer serve as rewards for playing the game, so I’ve decided against having them.”
Yup, people uploaded some of the game’s cutscenes on the Internet, so NO CUTSCENES FOR YOU in the sequel. Sakurai says there will still be a “separate mode from the standard versus play” for friendless folks, but it won’t take the story and cutscene-heavy approach of the last game.
Sigh. Just when you think Nintendo is starting to figure this whole “Internet” thing out, something like this happens. Take it from this professional Internet content creator — you can’t let dicks on the Internet ruin your fun or impede your creative process Nintendo.
