5 Games You Want This Week (Jan. 26th – Feb. 1st): Indies And Updates

By 01.27.14

After another couple week hiatus, 5 Games is back, and will probably stay back for the rest of the year. As in the past, I'll rattle off five games I think you should check out this week. These articles are not meant to be comprehensive lists of everything coming out that week -- think of them as a nice rounded tasting menu. So, let's get to it...

This Week's DLC

Call of Duty: Ghosts - Onslaught (Xbox 360 & Xbox One, Jan. 28th)

The next big Call of Duty: Ghosts DLC pack arrives this week, delivering the stuff you'd expect (new maps, new weapons, a new chapter for Extinction mode) and some stuff you might not (letting you play as slasher movie villain Michael Myers). If you have an Xbox you get Onslaught tomorrow -- if you have anything else, you'll have to wait a bit longer.

This Week's Second Kickstarter Project

Rymdkapsel (PC, Mac & Linux, Jan. 30th)

Released on smartphones last year to critical acclaim, Rymdkapsel is a Swedish space station planning strategy game stripped to its barest essentials. By all accounts the game is surprisingly addictive despite it's bare-bones presentation.

This Week's Adventure Game

Broken Age Act One (PC, Jan. 28th)

Hey, didn't I list Broken Age a couple weeks ago? Yes, I did, but that release date was just for Kickstarter backers. Now everyone else can get their hands on some good old-school point-and-click fun. The game's 25-dollar pricetag may seem a bit high, but you're actually paying for both chapters in advance -- once the second half of Broken Age is done you'll be able to download it for free.

This Week's Very Silly Thing

Octodad: Dadliest Catch (PC, Mac & Linux, Jan. 30th)

Octodad! was a charmingly goofy game starring an octopus trying to pose as a regular human family man. The challenge wasn't to save the world, but simply to do basic household chores without alerting your family to the fact that you were, in fact, just a cephalopod in a suit. Octodad: Dadliest Catch expands the ridiculous premise just enough by sending Octodad outside the house to the grocery store, an aquarium and other places where awkwardness will no doubt occur.

Pick of the Week

Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition (PS4 & Xbox One, Jan. 28th)

One of the best games of the past year gets a spiffed-up next-gen edition. Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition features touched up graphics, an all-new Lara model and all the DLC from the original game. If you missed out on Tomb Raider last year, you might want to look into this version.
