Last year, George Lucas and Steven Spielberg — who kicked off the whole summer blockbuster thing with Star Wars and Jawswarned that blockbusters will eventually cause an “implosion” of the movie industry. Oh man, an implosion? I hope the effects are good.

Their reason for grousing about blockbusters stemmed from their difficulty in getting mid-budget, non-tentpole movies Lincoln and Red Tails made. It’s a year later, and George Lucas is still angry. Surprisingly, his jowls aren’t making any of the defensive howling noises we expected to hear in the video above. How are fellow apex predators going to know how angry he is if he doesn’t even wharrgarbl at them? I guess he’ll use his words instead. Here’s what he told Charlie Rose on CBS This Morning, as transcribed by The Playlist:

“The problem has always been the studios. Although the beginning of the studios, the entrepreneurs who ran the studios were sort of creative guys. They would just take books and turn them into movies and do things like that. Suddenly all these corporations were coming in. They didn’t know anything about the movie business. […] The studios change everything all the time. And, unfortunately, they don’t have any imagination and they don’t have any talent.”

I never thought I’d be agreeing with George Lucas about the studios, but I do. Just as a show of solidarity, I’m going to refrain from making another fat joke or bashing the prequels, and instead post this tasteful, understated cover of John Williams’ “The Imperial March”.
