Agent Carter picked a really good night to roll out its two-hour premiere; if you’re a geek, there’s pretty much nothing else on. We’ll be liveblogging it tonight, both for the show itself, and for some trailer about a short guy. But in the meantime, here’s what you need to know about Agent Carter and her eponymous show.
What’s the plot?
In 1946, after spending five years applying boot to HYDRA ass, Agent Peggy Carter finds that the SSR, a precursor to Marvel’s S.H.I.E.L.D., praises her as a superb field agent and puts her in a role of authority. Just kidding! Actually they bust her down to the steno pool because the men are back from the war and nobody needs some chick running around doing a man’s job.
Unfortunately, since they suck at doing their jobs and/or are HYDRA agents, it’s up to Carter to hold down her day job while saving the world at night for eight episodes. Specifically, she’ll be saving the world from superweapons Howard Stark, Iron Man’s dad, has been framed for selling to evil powers. Also, she has a nice hat.
Who stars in it?
Hayley Atwell has the lead, continuing her role from the Captain America movies and the short film also named Agent Carter that was featured on Marvel’s home video releases. You’ll also see James D’Arcy as Edwin Jarvis, and yes, that’s the inspiration for the voice you hear in Iron Man’s headset in the movies. Chad Michael Murray of One Tree Hill will play Carter’s douchebag coworker, and there will be a few other surprises as the show goes along.
Do I need to see any Marvel movies to watch the show?
Not really. Carter didn’t have much of a presence in the comics until the movie was a hit and she became a breakout character, and in general, she’s shown up more on the TV side of things, having featured in a few episodes of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. It’s also not really a superhero show, at least in the sense that Carter has superpowers or something; it’s more of a period-piece spy drama with plenty of action.
You know we’re all watching for the Ant-Man trailer, right?
