Nintendo Will Launch A Smartphone App Featuring ‘New Original Games’

Nintendo has announced a partnership with DeNA, a Japanese web developer, in order to start producing Nintendo games for your smartphone.

I hope this means there will be a mobile app so I can water my plants in Animal Crossing from my phone. Sort of like how I can set my DVR from anywhere if I could figure out that app on my phone.

The new games will feature Nintendo’s characters, but will be not be shrunken versions of pre-existing games. According to the press release from DeNA:

To ensure the quality of game experience that consumers expect from this alliance of Nintendo and DeNA, only new original games optimized for smart device functionality will be created, rather than porting games created specifically for the Wii U home console or the Nintendo 3DS portable system.

Basically, they’re hoping that people will like the mobile version of something enough to want to buy a Wii U and play something else like it on a dedicated console. I’m not going to let the reality of better marketing (for both companies) through mobile apps diminish my hope and excitement for some sort of Mario Kart for my phone.

BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE:

Nintendo and DeNA expect to develop a new core system compatible with a variety of devices including PCs, smartphones and tablets as well as Nintendo’s dedicated video game systems, and are to jointly develop a membership service utilizing this system, with a launch targeted for the fall of 2015. The companies expect to further enhance their customer relationships through the membership service.

This might be why Club Nintendo closed earlier this year. Expect the newer, Clubbier Nintendo to include smartphone games.

If I can’t get an app to water my flowers remotely, I’d like to get an app that forwards me my mail. Because it’s crucial I get those letters from the Happy Home Academy as soon as is possible. I HAVE ROOMS TO TIE TOGETHER HERE, PEOPLE.*

*No, I can’t just bring my 3DS with me places to water the flowers because it’s not my 3DS. I’m obsessed with New Leaf, and I don’t even get to be the mayor OMG.
