Five Games: ‘Wolfenstein: The Old Blood’ And Everything Else You Need To Play This Week

PCs, handhelds, mobile, console, indies, triple A, free-to-play — the gaming scene gets more diverse and difficult to follow by the day, but thankfully, I’m here ever week to guide you through what’s happening with games.

As always, I’ll rattle off five games I think you might want to check out this week. Keep in mind, these articles aren’t meant to be comprehensive lists of everything coming out that week so much as a nice rounded tasting menu. So, let’s get to it…

This Week’s Indie Action Game

Not A Hero (PC, May 7)

Not A Hero is the latest game from OlliOlli developer, Roll7. Not A Hero definitely follows in OlliOlli‘s footsteps with an appealing retro art style and fluid action, but this particular game replaces skateboarding with ridiculously over-the-top bloody gunplay. Sounds good to me. Here’s the game’s Steam page.

This Week’s Puzzle Game

Snakebird (PC, May 4)

Snakebird is a game in which you play as a snake, who’s also a bird for, uh, some reason. Slither your snake through mazes, and eat fruit to make you longer while making sure not to block your exit with your own body. This looks like a deceptively challenging good time. Here’s the game’s Steam page.

This Week’s Conversational RPG

Last Word (PS Vita, May 8)

Last Word is a unique RPG that’s all about the fine art of conversation. Last Word takes place in a world where getting the last word gives you power over the person you were chatting with, so all the battles in Last Word are fought with words instead of swords and spells. This one could be a real conversation-starter. Eh? Eh? Here’s the game’s Steam page.

This Week’s Racing Game

Project CARS (PC, Xbox One & PS4, May 7)

Project CARS is a new independently developed racing sim from Slightly Mad Studios, a developer that previously worked on the Need For Speed: Shift games for EA. Despite being developed without the backing of a major publisher, Project CARS looks every bit as visually impressive as games like Gran Turismo or Forza and may be worth a look for fans of racing sims.

Note: The PC version of Project CARS comes out this week, but you’ll have to wait until next week (May 12) for the console versions. There’s also, apparently, still a Wii U version coming, although there’s no date on that.

Pick of the Week

Wolfenstein: The Old Blood (PC, Xbox One & PS4, May 5)

Wolfenstein: The Old Blood is a new stand-alone prequel to last year’s surprise hit, Wolfenstein: The New Order. You’ll once again play as B.J. Blazkowicz in two new stories. In one, he has to invade Castle Wolfenstein to retrieve some coordinates, and in the second he takes on Nazi archaeologists in a classic Indiana Jones-type setup. The Old Blood should deliver more big, dumb, but surprisingly well-written fun.

After a few slow weeks, things have finally picked up a bit. Any games you’re itching to get your hands on that I failed to mention? Hit the comments and let the world know.
